Beginning Pottery with Carol King

Registration for FALL classes begins at noon on August 12.  (*Registration must start on a week day.)

Novice potters will gain hands-on experience in throwing on the potter's wheel, hand-building, decorating, and glazing handmade pots. There will be technical demonstrations with plenty of time for individual assistance.  All levels welcome.

The course fee includes 25 pounds of clay, glazes, and Cone 6 oxidation firings.  A variety of clays are available, and clay used in the class must be purchased from the Craft Enrichment Program.

The Craft Enrichment studio is a teaching studio designed for the development and enhancement of skills. It is not for volume production of items or for production of items for commercial sale. However, the Craft Enrichment Program does encourage participation in the December and May student sales and the Empty Bowls event.

Carol King has been a member of the Boone, NC community since 1977 where she started her education at Appalachian State University. After starting her family, she completed her BS in Mathematics at Lees McRae College, with a concentration in Middle Grades, and later completed her Secondary Ed Certification from ASU. She has taught in a number of Watauga County schools, ending the last 12 years of her career at Watauga High School. During this time, Carol picked up an interest in ceramics as a means of recreation and creative expression. This began in 2001 with her first pottery class taught by Bob Meier. The following year she began running Open Studios for him at Doe Ridge Pottery. She has also taken advantage of working with a number of successful potters over the years. Her work continued to improve and take on its own uniqueness, so in 2009 she began selling her work. Teaching has always been a second nature for Carol, and she is excited about sharing her love of the craft and the techniques she has learned over the years. Her work can be seen at Doe Ridge Pottery Gallery in Historic Downtown Boone.
