Painting Water with Watercolor

Description

Description

If you are inspired to paint landscapes that have flowing water or water reflections, join JoAnn Pippin to learn watercolor tips and techniques especially focused on water environments. We will paint four scenes based on various water conditions.  There will be a weekly recorded demonstration, a reference photo, and a transferable drawing for you to download and follow along with as you paint. You will learn to plan compositions, choose colors to create moods, and use both brush and non-brush techniques to imitate nature.

This class is for students with some experience.

Format

Online, featuring a mix of 4 recorded demonstration sessions and 5 live online sessions.   Recorded sessions will feature a demonstration of a waterfall with its rocky surroundings, motion in a disturbed pool, reflections of trees and rocks,  and sunset color in sky and water. You will be able to replay the recording as you paint the demonstration painting or similar subjects. You will then send images of your work(s) to the instructor via email.  JoAnn will review the work in a weekly live critique.  The first class is a live session devoted to questions about supplies and equipment.

Supplies

Watercolor brushes, paper, and paints with a warm and a cool version of each primary color and the neutral colors Payne’s gray and burnt sienna. Waterproof backboard such as Gatorboard, a stapler which can open up, and neutral masking tape.  Also a palette that can be closed airtight with space to mix colors.  Water containers, spray bottle, paper towels, small toilet paper roll, scissors.  For non-brush techniques, masking fluid, a toothbrush, straws, kosher and table salt, and an old credit card are good tools.  Email JoAnn for paint brand and brush suggestions.

Equipment

Internet Connection and the ability to download Zoom.  Computer or tablet, or phone with screen large enough to view demonstrations.
