In this class you will gain hands-on experience in throwing, hand-building, surface decoration, and glazing handmade pots.  There will be technical demonstrations, exposure to basic design concepts, and a chance to explore how to make some of your own design ideas.  All skill levels are welcome.

The course fee includes 25 pounds of clay, glazes, and Cone 6 oxidation firings. Cone 10 firing and additional clay are available for a fee. A variety of clays are available, and clay used in the class must be purchased from the Craft Enrichment Program.

The Craft Enrichment studio is a teaching studio designed for the development and enhancement of skills. It is not for volume production of items or for production of items for commercial sale.  However, the Craft Enrichment Program does encourage participation in the December and May student sales and the Empty Bowls event.

Rick Brake learned to throw at Clay Designs Studio in Concord, N.C.  Wanting to learn more, he moved to the mountains and took a job in a pottery studio where he worked for five years learning to make functional pottery, production work, and the general workings of running a studio.  Much of the artistic part of his training came from his partnership in forming High Meadows Pottery.  Today Rick works in his own studio, The Potter’s Shop, in Jefferson, N.C.  He teaches pottery there, in the Wilkes Art Gallery, and in the Craft Enrichment Program

PLEASE NOTE: Most classes meet over multiple weeks. Registration for each class is open until the class fills or until 1 week before the class begins, whichever comes first.
